The brief of the competition was to design a high-end housing complex along with its public facilities in a 10,8 hectares site. This time, we focused more on bringing some local Indonesian aspects and flavours in our design through building forms that are inspired by traditional Indonesian architecture, the use of local building materials, and a unique spatial arrangement inside the house involving a central open-to-sky courtyard.

Another focus was to bring more communal activities into a modern residential complex, something that is very rare in most high-end residences in and around Jakarta.

Communal gardens are present in each block, with direct access from the backyard of each house units, and interconnectivity between different blocks allows further social interactions.
The name “Arkara” is a word taken from the Sanskrit language, meaning “to shine brightly”, showing our intention to create a shining example of how a high-end housing in Indonesia can be redefined by going back to some of the elements of traditional Indonesian villages.
